The Knowledge & Information Centre and Bio-ICT, AMDI had joined the Public Sector Open Source Software Competition of the 3rd annual MyGOSSCON from 4 – 6 November 2009 at PICC, Putrajaya.

For your information our Open Source Integrated Library System (KOHA) had been awarded as the 1st winner for the category of IPTA. Congratulation to KIC and Bio-ICT Team...!!!

Within 4-6 November 2009, we had great experiences and memories in PICC, Putrajaya... The KIC and Bio-ICT team work together to do the best before and during the exhibition. Actually, besides KOHA..AMDI bring along another 3 of open source software that were used by AMDI to be demo at the exhibition. There are OsiriX, Care2x dan MyPin.

Futhermore, En Mohd Nasir presented his case study on the 6 November 2009. Well done En Mohd Nasir..!!

Our team arrived at PICC on the 4 Nov 2009 and we set up our booth. We put up beautiful backdrop, buntings and posters for our booth..AMDI, USM booth was beautiful.

During the exhibition, there are so many people visited our booth and they're interested to know more about KOHA. We non stop explaining and show the KOHA demostration to them and they really like it. That's was fun, for me this is my 1st experience and I love it.

Serials Module in KOHA..

Salam and hello to everyone..

I think it's not too late for me to wish Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri Maaf Zahir dan Batin to all muslims..

I'm sure that you already know about few of koha modules and now I would love to share about Serials Module with you.

Koha ILS Serials module be able to register subcriptions with reiviews, and to track the arrival of periodicals. Serials module manages late issues, skipped issues and claims with the suppliers.

Koha ILS manages complex classifications, allowing the librarian to work with eleven different publication periods (from daily newspapers to annual publications), with delayed publications and with publications out of sequence.

A state of the collection can be defined which will synthesize the missing publications, received publications, etc. The state of the collection can be displayed differently in the OPAC and in the librarian interface.

This module is simple but really useful and user friendly. Ok, that's it for now...I will share more information about this system with all of you.

KOHA Cataloging module (Includes Z39.50 interface)

I want to share more information about Open Source Library system KOHA. This time is about Cataloging Module.

Actually, KOHA does not compromise on cataloging standards, KOHA ILS Cataloging module support UNIMARC, and MARC21 flavor. KOHA ILS also able to import bulk MARC record based on ISO2709 format.

One of unresisted features in KOHA ILS Cataloging module is it ability to import record directly from another library bibliographic database via z39.50 interface. This features would help librarian a lot in automating their cataloging their cataloging works and increase speed and productivity.

KOHA ILS cataloging module able to support several frameworks. Librarian can define "frameworks" to do different cataloging for monographs, electronic resources, periodicals, web and etc.Frameworks is a predefined tags for each specifics materials.

Each MARC tag and and subfield maybe presented to the librarian, using the explicit tag description. Example:"Title" for tag Tag 245$a, "Personal name" for tag 100$a and etc.) The corressponding tag number is also visible where necessary or preferable. Inthis way, librarian not need to memorize these tags.

Moreover, each MARC subfiled in KOHA ILS can be affected by user constraint as follows:
-Required subfield
-Required subfield
-Data type:

Free format: There is no contraint on the data that can be entered.

Subfield with "authorized value". A list presents the possible values for the subfield. This type of contraint is used, for example, for the language of the document, or the type of work (CDROM, monograph, etc.)
Subfield connected to a thesaures/authority list. in this case, ILS makes it possibe for the cataloger to open a new window for searching in the thesaures/authority list (Proper names, Common nouns, Collective authors, etc)
"Hidden" tag/field: managed and visib;e in the MARC editor, but invisible in the OPAC.
Tag/field can be made clickable link in the OPAC (support URL Link)
"Synonymous semantic": This constraint makes it possible to extend a seach on this field over other field which have the same semantic significant.
Catalogue data can be displayed in MARC format, in simplified form or ISBD format, in both the librarian interface and the Web Based OPAC.

For your information, KIC already used this module and find that it is very user friendly and easy.-Liza-

Sweet Memories Outward Bound Malaysia, Lumut!!

Hello friends ...............

From 13-16 July 2009, we had great experiences and memories in Lumut... Well, out of 400 staffs in IPPT, USM, 40 of us been selected to join this Outward Bound School program...among us are top level management staffs, middle management staffs and also subordinates from different ages. It sounds like very though and very difficult to mix around. But yes, we had a great opportunity to know each other better. No boss, no position. We are just like brothers & sisters and we had to complement to each other.

This compact 4 days course is suitable for those busy working adults who are unable to be away for an extended period of time. There, we have to involve ourselves in outdoor activities aimed at promoting and reinforcing the qualities required from an effective team person. Alexander Graham Bell quotes that "Great discoveries and achievements invariably involve the cooperation of many minds." During this program, the experiences highlighted on team spirit, team cohesiveness and people skills. This program a little bit different from the one we had joined before. For those people who love outdoors or challenging activities, please go and grab this opportunities.

KIC Books Exhibition' 09

AMDI Knowledge & Information Centre is holding a book exhibition'09 which will be held on 7-10 July at Training Gallery Room, Knowledge & Information Centre from 8.30am-5.00pm.

A total of more than 150 titles will be on display covering various disciplines from different publishers during the exhibition. All staffs are encouraged to select book titles that you wish KIC to purchase.

Well users, please come and support us. This is a great opportunity to add more reading materials in our collection. Support KIC!!!

Want to know what can KOHA do in Acquisition module?

I already shared with all of you about cataloging module in KOHA..Now, I would like to add more information about this system with all of you. For me, using this system is quite interesting...Ok, now let me tell you about Acquisition and Fund Modules in KOHA.

KOHA ILS support simple and full acquisition module. The simple acquisitions module makes it possible to acquire materials and add the directly to the catalogue. It does manage budgetary matters, the orders placed with the suppliers, etc. The Full Acquisition module makes library possible tp manage:

Budget and Book Funds- Fund can be split according to library branches, items acquired and etc.. Budget tracking should be one of value added function. Librarian can tract Available Budget (Remaining), Committed and Spent.

Suppliers- KOHA ILS able to capture, store and manage Suppliers Information, Status (Active/Inactive), Invoice and List Price Currency, Purchase Order and Invoice.

Exchange Rate- KOHA ILS have ability to set Currency Exchange Rate.

For your information, order could be made based on New Order or Purchase Suggestion by patrons. KOHA ILS are able to generate Purchase Order, Invoice and Receipt. Patron also are able to suggest purchase via OPAC module.

USM ICOL 2009 (15-16 June 2009) was a great event organised by USM libraries this year. Within these 2 days, we got great memories for us to share....behind the scene, during the ceremony and after the ceremony....but so far everythings perfect....with a great teamwork................

With more than 130 participants, all around Malaysia, we could share all experiences, knowledge and expertise in library field...Hopefully, ICOL 2011 will be more succesfull!!!

Continued from the previous post...I would like to add more info about Cataloging module in KOHA...

For your information, KOHA ILS Cataloging module actually can support UNIMARC, and MARC21 flavor. KOHA ILS also able tp import bulk MARC record on ISO2709 format...

Besides, each MARC tag and subfield maybe presented to the librarian, using the explicit tag description..

Salam kepada semua,

Saya ingin berkongsi dengan semua tentang pengalaman pertama manggunakan sistem terbuka KOHA. Seperti yang telah di ketahui Pusat Ilmu dan Maklumat sedang dalam tempoh percubaan menggunakan sistem terbuka KOHA..terdapat beberapa modul di dalam sistem KOHA seperti Aquisition, Cataloging, Circulation, Patron, Serials serta Accaunt and Reports.

Perkara yang menarik mengenai sistem terbuka ini adalah kita boleh customize sistem ini mengikut kehendak dan keperluan perpustakaan..

Sebelum menggunakan sistem KOHA di PIM, kami telah di beri latihan oleh En Akla untuk setting dan customize sistem ini. En Akla telah menerangkan kepada semua setiap fungsi modul-modul yang terdapat di dalam KOHA dan cara mengaplikasi setiap modul-modul tersebut.

Baru- baru ini staf PIM telah membuat percubaan dan latihan untuk menggunakan module cataloging dan aquisition..module ini agak simple dah mudah di gunakan...

Untuk module cataloging...kita boleh set bibliographic framework untuk bahan-bahan yang terdapat di dalam perpustakaan bagi memudahkan proses membuat original cataloging. Melalui modul ini juga, seperti sistem lain kita boleh import biblio dgn mengguna z39.50..

Well terdapat banyak lagi untuk dikongsi mengenai sistem terbuka ini...kita akan sambung lagi di lain masa...bye..-liza-

* Data: Scattered, unrelated facts, writings, numbers, or symbols.

* Information: Selected, organized and analyzed data.

* Knowledge: Information combined with user’s ability and experience that is
used to solve a problem or to create new knowledge.

* Wisdom: Forward looking and thinking based on one’s values and commitment.

The differences between information and knowledge can be summarized as:
* Information is visible, independent from action and decision,
different in format after processing, physical product, independent from existing environment, easily transferable, and duplicable.

* Knowledge is invisible, closely related to action and decision, different in thought after processing, spiritual product, identified with existing environment, transferable through learning, and not duplicable.

I would like to share with u all about the World Digital Library, a website offering free access to rare books, maps, manuscripts, films and photographs from across the globe, will launch April 21 at UNESCO.

Its cultural content from libraries and archives worldwide will be available in seven languages -- Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish -- and will also include material in additional languages.

Something to share - cataloging issues

Morning to everybody!!
Harap-harap semua sihat sejahtera.
Erm, apa yang perlu dikongsi pada hari ni.
Well, pagi nie ada 2 pertanyaan yang i perolehi. Please correct me if im wrong.

yang pertama what is the difference between trace and untrace series. Atau easy explaination tag 440 & 490 in cataloging. Actually susah juga nak explain, tapi untuk dipendekkan cerita;

440 is a series title statement yang biasanya serves for dual purposes;

- a series statement & a series added entry (title is searchable)

- Biasanya 440 field ni is present (biasanya ada dalam buku) dan tak perlu dilinkan dengan tag 8xx

- Tag 440 nie juga ada di dalam authority control. maksudnya kita boleh buat series-title search dalam satu masa.

- indicatornya pula:

a) 1st indicator - undefined

b) 2nd indicator - nonfiling character

c) 0 - no nonfiling character

d) 1-9 - Number of non-filing character

490 contains a series statement. It does not serve as series added entry.

- tag 490 tak searchable. 490 is not under authority contol. tapi kalu nak bagi ia searchable mestilah di linkan dengan tag 8xx. iaitu, 800, 810, 811, 830.

- Indicatornya juga berlainan mengikut tag.

satu lagi soalan yang i dapat...erm, buku yang diserang orang pest. My 1st experience menghadapi masalah macam nie..i kena call main campus to find out...so later baru i inform how to settle this problem!!

Last Friday (27/03/09), my Library made a small farewell party special dedicated to my beloved Boss, Mr. Adnan Sharif. He’s leaving because he has been promoted! My Chief Librarian has transferred him to another branch of our libraries. That was the great party that we ever had since I joined this Library. The party was simple however the “mood” that we all felt was the best part of that moment.

I’m writing this special for my boss. Let me tell you how special my boss is!

I feel lucky and excited to get new job at USM. Meanwhile, I also feel great responsibilities on my shoulder. I joined this library since 1 1/2 years ago. There are many difficulties and challenges ahead of me. However, I’m very confident under the leadership of Mr. Adnan, everything will run smoothly. And yes, within these times, I’m really happy to work with him. Knowing him is the best part of my journey.

He is the best leader that I ever known. He’s very encouraging person. He loves to share his knowledge and information that he knows. With his 17 years experiences in the Library field, no doubt he can answer any questions in my head. Well, he also loves to talk about socials and politics too. Ask him anything on these issues, definitely he will answers you with a great sample of stories.

My dear boss, I also know you as a good person at heart. You always give me advice and support. You never complained about us. However, you love to compliment and smile at us. That’s the most special about you.

Good advices from him to me “We must always have good expectations about others, always forgive others AND Don’t be afraid to be the first one to apologize…….”

Finally, I would like to thank to Mr. Adnan for your support and guidance. Congratulation and good luck for new position!
